Maybe you have seen the trucks with a smiling chef on the back, throwing food into a trashcan. The trucks are labelled with „Refood“. The word itself raises connotations like catfood, burger meat or maybe even muesli. What the heck is the chef doing with the food he collects in a trashcan. You don’t really want to contemplate …
But I was curious and looked it up on the internet (did I mention that I am happy to be back online? ;-)). The company Refood belongs to Saria, which is a european company specialized in waste management. Refood collects organic waste from restaurants (kitchen waste, frying fat etc.) and the food industry and recycles it. No they don’t make catfood out of it, but – among others – biogas, fermentation substrate and cleaned frying fat for biodiesel production and energy production.
Good, no organic waste in my burgers.
